Scuderi Engine on Display at The Washington Auto Show®
Revolutionary air-hybrid engine being exhibited for first time

The Scuderi Engine, a revolutionary internal combustion engine, will be exhibited for the first time at The Washington Auto Show’s Advanced Technology SuperHighway, a 65,000 square-foot showcase of the auto industry’s most innovative technologies.

“We’re so thrilled to be showcasing the Scuderi Engine at The Washington Auto Show,” said Charles Stringfellow, WAS Chairman and CEO of Brown’s Automotive. “There is so much promise and potential in this technology, and we’re proud to give showgoers an early look.”

The Scuderi Engine exhibit will demonstrate a revolutionary thermodynamic process, the Scuderi Cycle. It’s a new process where all four strokes of the pistons take place in two separate cylinders but in only one rotation of the crankshaft, instead of the two rotations that occur in a conventional engine. And because the spark plug fires later when the piston is on the way down, it achieves a more robust combustion and a cleaner burn of the fuel – but in half the work of a conventional engine. This results in potential efficiency gains of up to 50 percent while emitting up to 80 percent less toxins than a conventional engine – all while maintaining the power and torque of a diesel engine.

“We believe this could be the biggest advancement in internal combustion engines since the Otto cycle was developed over 130 years ago,” said Scuderi Group President Salvatore Scuderi.

While the Scuderi Engine is attracting major attention in the auto industry now, this hasn’t always been the case. When Carmelo Scuderi, an American inventor and retired engineer, announced in 2001 that he had redesigned the internal combustion engine, making it dramatically more fuel-efficient, even his family thought the idea was far-fetched. However, his children helped Carmelo patent the design, and after his death in 2002, the family continued research and development on the Scuderi Cycle. Today, the Scuderi Group is owned by Carmelo Scuderi’s wife, five sons and three daughters.

Now in its 68th edition, The Washington Auto Show: “Change Happens Here” will bring more than 700 vehicles from over 42 domestic and import manufacturers to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center from Jan. 27-31, 2010. A special 65,000-square foot exhibit, “The Advanced Technology SuperHighway” will showcase the latest technologies in safety and sustainability.
