BMW adds a new number to its lineup, beginning with a swanky coupe; big-power M4 follows for 2015.
The 428i uses 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine; 435i puts you in control of a 300-horsepower turbocharged inline-six; six-speed manual or eight-speed-automatic-transmission option.
Audi’s A4 and Mercedes-Benz’s C- and E-class lines have no problem offering a wide array of models under a single banner. But that no longer plays with BMW that has decided to spin off its 3 Series coupe into a whole new category. Other than the obvious, the differences are subtle, but the 4 Series is in fact a bit wider and longer (but two-inches lower in roofline) than the 3 Series sedan and the space between the front and rear axle has increased a bit as well. It all adds up to a more sporting experience for the driver along with a cooler personal-luxury look. The 4 Series models are easily among the most attractive of their type to be found anywhere, at any price. The bewildering part is that, despite their enlarged stature, they still look like the 3 Series models, especially from the front. They also come with the same powertrains that are also found in other Bimmers. The base 428i coupe is equipped with a 240-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The powerplant makes 260 pound-feet of torque and can propel the car to 60 mph in an impressive 5.7 seconds. The 435i uses a 300-horsepower (and 300 pound-feet of torque) six-cylinder engine, which reduces the 60-mph-sprint time to 5.3 seconds. Either engine is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, or optional eight-speed automatic. You can also equip each edition with BMW’s x-Drive all-wheel-drive setup plus a trio of option groupings — Luxury Line, Sport Line and M Sport — that add items such as distinctive wheels (a BMW specialty), leather interior and sport-style seats. Those are in addition to numerous extra-cost packages that, taken together, will seriously inflate the base prices of your 4 Series.
