Overall: The best-selling model in the Lexus garage finally gets the all-new treatment and makes a bigger and bolder statement.

Drivetrain: The RX 350’s V6 makes 295 horsepower, while the hybrid RX 450h uses the same engine displacement and an integrated electric motor to generate 308 horses; both available with front- or all-wheel-drive.

The RX has been a trendsetter since it first arrived for the 1999 model year. In terms of style, the latest fourth-generation version is no different. With an angular grille, creased door panels and “floating” rear roof pillars, Lexus’s franchise model doesn’t beg for your attention, it practically demands it. For 2016 the RX 350 and 450h hybrid variant have been stretched by about two inches between the front and rear wheels and nearly four inches in overall length. That’s good news for passengers who are treated to a cabin with additional rear-seat space and a larger stowage area for their stuff. The RX 350 comes with a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, while a newly standard eight-speed automatic transmission (previously offered only on the F-Sport trim) directs power to the front or both axles. The RX 450h functions with its own 259-horsepower version of the 3.5 V6, but combined with up to three motor generators, it makes 308 horsepower. All-wheel-drive is available for gasoline and hybrid RX models; its electronically controlled system sends 100 percent of the power to the front wheels under optimal road conditions and directs up to 50 percent of the torque to the rear wheels when needed. Both base models come well equipped, but should you desire more there’s an extensive array of options designed to further pamper and keep you safe. They include an F Sport trim, available on RX 350 and 450h AWD models, features a continuously variable suspension that instantly adjusts to road and driving conditions, additional instrumentation, sport bucket seats, blacked-out grille and unique 10-spoke 20-inch wheels.
