These two-seat mini-Minis provide the same thrills as the regular Mini hatch and convertible, but give off a more youthful, fun-loving vibe.
A 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is available in three strengths; six-speed manual transmission and optional six-speed-automatic choices; all-new powertrains should arrive by the 2015 model year.
The two-door, two-seat Cooper Coupe and Cooper Roadster sit opposite to the Countryman and Paceman at the Mini table. They might not be as passenger-practical as their siblings, but they do offer a fair amount of stowage space, whether you opt for the coupe with its hatchback door, or the roadster that is the first and so far only Mini model to feature an actual trunk. We’re not talking cavernous space, but there’s enough to store a few decent-sized travel bags or a set or two of golf clubs regardless of whether the top is in the up or down position. The Roadster’s windshield frame has been significantly reinforced and functions in concert with the twin padded steel roll bars to provide a measure of protection should a worst-case tip-over event occur. Both body styles feature an active spoiler (with manual override controls) that automatically extends whenever the Coupe exceeds 50 mph. It adds up to 88 pounds of downforce. The Coupe and Roadster are easily the sportiest of the Mini models and their firm suspension settings reflect this characteristic. An available sports suspension package with extra-stiff shocks and thicker anti-sway bars is optional for those who enjoy shaking their fillings loose. The powertrain lineup is no different than for that of every other Mini. Base models are fitted with a 121-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder, while the S features a 181-horse turbocharged version. At the top is the JCW (John Cooper Works) edition that pumps out 208 horsepower from its turbo motor. The JCW also adds a body kit, Brembo-brand brakes, distinctive alloy wheels and a fancier interior. Transmission choices for all models consist of a six-speed manual, or optional six-speed automatic with paddle-shift controls. With the original Mini coupe/hatch receiving new turbocharged three- and four-cylinder powerplants in 2014, both of these offshoots will likely follow suit by the 2015 model year.
