The slick little Eos stays the course for 2014, which is good because there’s one less folding-hardtop four-seat convertible to choose from this season with the demise of the Volvo C70.


VW’s multitasking turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder remains the sole powerplant; the same goes for the six-speed paddle-shift manual transmission with automatic mode.

More stylish that all-out sporty, the Eos premium convertible maintains a niche presence in Volkswagen’s lineup. The cleverly packaged drop-top was last given a makeover for 2012, but the fun-to-watch-go-up-and-down five-piece retractable roof with its built-in sunroof was left alone. It neatly stacks, automatically, beneath the rear deck in about 25 seconds to create an open-air tourer. With safety in mind, the Eos’s designers extended the windshield pillars all the way down to the car’s floor pan. As an added measure, a rollover bar behind the back seat automatically deploys at the first whiff of trouble. These measures are in addition to a full set of airbags plus headlights that swivel in the direction you turn the steering wheel. Count on dual-zone climate control, cruise control, tilt steering wheel keyless remote entry and 17-inch wheels included on the base models, along with a premium audio system and a 12-way power driver’s seat. For 2014, Eos is available in Komfort, Sport and Executive trim levels, the latter featuring a full range of goodies including leather seat coverings, navigation system, an awesome 650-watt Dynaudio-brand sound package and 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inchers are standard). The only engine continues to be a 200-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder (not the 210-horse version that other VW models are receiving for 2014). It’s hooked up to a six-speed automated manual Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) that’s capable of initiating rapid-fire gear changes while helping to save fuel in the process.
