Overview: Volvo’s sexy wagon is joined by an off-road-ish Cross Country version for 2016.
Drivetrains: A turbo-fest of four-, five- and six-cylinder engines; eight-speed automatic transmission for the four-cylinder, six-speed automatics for the rest.
Because the V60 shares many of its physical traits with the S60 sedan, that generally also means sub-models too. In length, width and distance between the front and rear wheels, both are virtually tied. In terms of cargo capacity the V60 comes up a bit short compared to the boxier XC70, owing to a sloping roofline that restricts stowage space. The new V60 Cross Country pretty much copies the old XC70 in concept: car-based platform, raised ride height and some exterior touches to make it look more likely to tackle the great outdoors. In a weird way, that sort of makes sense since the XC70 is based on the old-old S60 platform from ages ago. But why continue to sell both? Good question. Both V60 models have the new-for-2015 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder “Drive-E” engine that’s standard in the front-wheel-drive base T5 models and produces 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. You can also select a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the T5 AWD that makes 250 horsepower and 266 pound-feet. A turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 325 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque is found in the AWD R-Design. An eight-speed automatic transmission connects to the 2.0, while a six-speed automatic is used for both the five- and six-cylinder engines. A major bonus with the 2.0 is its impressive 25-mpg rating in the city and 37 on the highway. Base V60 Premier models are loaded with climate control, leather seats and a moonroof. Moving up to the five-cylinder AWD Premium Plus adds a rear-park-assist camera, fold-flat front passenger seat and power-retractable outside mirrors, while the Platinum series includes navigation, premium sound system and a auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors. Among an impressive selection of advanced crash-avoiding aids is a Road Side Information Camera that warns if the driver exceeds the posted speed limit. For 2016, all V60 variants get new wheel designs.
